Bill Eppinger

Biography
Bill Eppinger (b.1961) lives and works in Frenchtown NJ. Eppinger is a Born-Again Christian and much of his work comes to him as messages from God. He maintains a two dimensional art practice of translating these messages, and a sculptural practice oriented towards the architectural. Eppinger loves to ride his bike, play chess, and look for interesting rocks to paint while walking around town. Eppinger’s work has been shown at ArtYard NJ and Beauty Gallery NJ.
About Eppinger’s work
Eppinger’s spiral notebooks record near daily visions he receives from God in marker, ballpoint pen, highlighter, white-out, tape, post-its, and paper scraps. Drawings often spill over the edges of their pages, with patchwork sections added to accommodate a growing idea-image, and then folded to fit back into the boundary of the book. The images are unceasingly surprising, with a vision of plaid texture abutting one of a large pink hand followed by ‘POW POW POW POW POW POW’, the last few words of which extend past the bottom of the page. Eppinger’s channeling results in a collection of images which delightfully expand out from any sense of container or theme. In material and depiction they seem to reflect the unconfinedness of the world, where containers are often inadequate.
For Eppinger, resourcefulness is paramount. He engages the everyday objects of his life in his work, frequently tracing his own hands, the cap of a deodorant stick, small tools, and collected figurines; transforming them into symbols and characters that populate his world, and extending his drawing practice out into the physical. Eppinger’s celestial faith and earthly interest in materiality meet in surprising, mysterious, and ritualistic works.
