Hello! Thank you for your interest in becoming an artist at Studio Route 29.
We are a community space for all, and a supported art studio specifically for artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
This page is for people who want to join our supported studio program. We do not require previous art experience, only an interest in art. The cost is sliding scale, $0-100 (your choice). We take out of pocket payment or Medicaid 'Goods and Services' money. We are looking forward to hearing from you!
Here's the process:
- Contact us: email (studio@studioroute29.org) or call (908 248 2438) to schedule a tour of our space and two free trial visits to the studio.
- Come for your tour and trial visits. On the tour we'll show you the studio space where people make art, our gallery, shop, and theater. You can get a sense of the space, the people, and what kinds of art happens here. During your two free sessions you can get a more in depth feel for it all and make sure you are comfortable and excited about making artwork with us and in a shared studio space. This is also when studio staff will determine eligibility using an artist agreement and expectations form which we will give and explain to you at the time of your first visit.
- After that, we'll work together to schedule a regular studio time and you can officially sign an artist agreement and fill out some other paperwork. We’ll check in after three months and six months to confirm that this is a good fit all around and make sure we are meeting your needs as an artist.
- Make art! Make community! Be kind! Have a good time!
Here's how payment works:
Our sliding scale for session costs is from $0 to $100 and above. For example, artists may attended for free, $5, $10, $60, or even higher than $100 if they wish to help subsidize others. This scale is meant to work for you and you are asked to choose the amount you will pay. All are welcome in the studio regardless of their DDD budget or finances. Please pay an amount you are comfortable paying sustainably over time. Since budget and finances sometimes change, please don't hesitate to change your session cost to reflect your current situation.
Our sliding scale is made possible entirely by donations and grants. Any amount of donation is very helpful to us and we ask that if you can afford to pay more you consider doing so as it will directly support the work of another artist.
