Look Everywhere
Artworks and Images
For more information on this exhibition please visit Jennifer Lauren Gallery online here.
‘LOOK EVERYWHERE’ showcases works from thirty-three artists working from thirty progressive art studios across the United States. Curated by Jennifer Gilbert of Jennifer Lauren Gallery, it highlights the exciting creativity emerging from these studios, further expanding the conversation around the inclusivity and significance of artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities and asserting their rightful place within the contemporary art world.
This exhibition is split into six distinct themes. A wide breadth of materials and processes are on show with each artist revealing their unique, individualised practice. Thirty featured artists are still creating today, with three others sadly deceased (Walter Mika, Helen Rae and Judith Scott).
To enable visitors to interact on their own terms several elements have been added, including a touch table allowing audiences to feel materials used in several exhibited works, braille, and an ASL (American Sign Language) video.
Florence and Elias Katz founded three Bay Area organizations with Creative Growth being their first in 1974. In their 1990 book Art & Disabilities: Establishing the Creative Art Center for People with Disabilities, they wrote: “Our philosophy is that each person has the right to the richest and fullest development of which he is capable. Since we believe that creativity is the highest actualization of human functioning, it is of paramount importance to provide an environment in which creativity is appreciated, stimulated and encouraged.” There is nothing more to be said.
‘LOOK EVERYWHERE’ exhibition support from Matthew Callinan, Kristin Lindgren and Samantha Mitchell. Major support for the overall ‘LOOK HERE’ project is provided by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage and Haverford College’s Hurford Center for the Arts and Humanities, with additional support from Atelier Fine Art Services and Advertising Systems Inc.
